Show The 1962 University of Utah track team was faced with another tough rebuilding job during this season's campaign. The Redskins lost nine lettermen from last year's mediocre squad and according to Coach Marv Hess, this season's prospects were at least no better than last year's.During the season Coach Hess changed his opinion. Many of his new and returning track men showed unexpected improvement and a great desire to win. With the new inspiration the Redskins handed defeats to such teams as Utah State University, West Texas State, Idaho State College, and Los Angeles State College.Top performers included Blaine Lindgren, conference record holder in the high hurdles and Skyline champ the last two years in both the high and lows. This season Lindgren ran the high hurdles in the time of 13.9, which is a new Western Division record; Jon Johnson, second in the Skyline 880 last year and a good man in the mile relay; Neil Schmitt, who tied forsecond in the conference pole vault; and Krege Christensen, second place finisher in the skyline javelin in 1961 is capable of being great in this event.New comers who helped the Redskins include Gary Lambert, outstanding distance man from Olympus High, who proved to be one of the best milers and three milers in the conference. Lambert was clocked in the mile at the time of 4:18.5.Dave McClintock, distance man from Addandale, Virginia; Louis Moench, top 440 prepster in the state last year from Olympus; Wendell Smoot, a good prospect in the discus from East High, and Bob Spencer, who didn't compete last year, but was second in the low hurdles in the 1960 Skyline Conference meet.Daily Oliver is the Redskins' top sprinter.
