Show Let us give education to the individual. Let us give the large amount of energy, which is always available in our educational systems, to the individual. When we have done this, what does student activity mean to the individual. In the name of education, student activities can only exist for the sake of the individual. The particular activity should have meaning to the educational process. It should be of the mind, by the mind, and for the mind. Anything less is not in the name of education. It is for some' thing else. This does not eliminate, in these activities, the element of entertainment. For entertainment at it's best appeals to the intellect.Education must be the continual refining of the intellect. It is hourly, daily and yearly. So the activities must be the expression of this continual intellectual refinement. These expressions of individual creativity should be the very basis of the group gathering. This is the manifestation of the individual, by the individual, and for the individual. All of this goes on within the group. For this reason let us remember what the group and its activity should stand for. The group is a collection of entities. Each person should be whole and should be an honest statement. Thus the group itself can never be an entity; only the persons. The persons in this collection are concerned with each other not with themselves. When alone, each person is concernedwith his self development. When he is again part of this collection he will be making a contribution to his colleagues by virtue of the progress he made when he was an unsur-rounded person. So now we have a valuble system which will fulfill and further the condition of society. Let the orater speak! For I can learn the power of speech from him. Let the musician perform his work! For without music I need not ears. Let the artist show his creation. For he is my interpreter. Let the philosopher be my index to life's complexities! For philosophy is as important as life itself. When all has been witnessed we begin to understand what a society must be. We have the fundamentals to human refinement. Giving of knowledge can be the only reason for the social perspective. The campus activity must now be the highest level of individual participation. We must have no more activity if it is only for play. There is not enough time and good minds to discuss the most important ideas of man. We must be aware that time is the only element by which the individual can achieve authority. There is no mending the time we abuse. We must be counting for passing moments and the future will be the record. The only element which gives life is time. Activities must be the using of time and the beginning of individual progress.Paul Ellingson |
