Show Spotlight celebrated its third anniversary this year by presenting to the public a $350,000 Brazilian exhibit. Each' year the Union Board Committee chooses a particular area or country in the world to present to the students under the title of "Spotlight," usually held in February. Operating as a Union service committee, Spotlight promotes a program in order to serve the educational and social interests of the communities in Utah. This activity fosters a better understanding ofcultures throughout the world which are differentfrom our own. A display of Brazilian art worthover $100,000 served as a backdrop for the tapestries, sculpturing, and semi-precious stones included in thetxhibit. After sampling Brazilian coffee, visitorscould listen to lectures pertaining to the culturaland political aspects of the country or take anarmchair tour of South America by film.^Spotlight's Brazilian presentation was a hallmark among this year's University projects.Through the various forms of presentation, it was hopedthat the students of the University would gain a morecomprehensive knowledge of the economic, social, and political forces at work in Brazil as. well as itscustoms, art, and general way of life. A highlyinteresting and entertaining aspect of the moregala side of Brazilian life was seen in the formof a flashy guitarist-singer team. Jose Pauloand Carmen Costa roamed about the Unionin authentic costume entertaining variousgroups. A group of children was thrilledwhen the entertainers put on a specialshowr for them right in the main foyer. The team displayed high quality showmanship and high praise and loud applause were given liberally.'Spotlight on the Law," an interesting sidelightof the exhibits, began as a protective measureagainst theft of the valuable exhibition pieces. It ended up, however, as a study on film byour Utonian photographers. An obviousinterest in "matters of consequence" isshown by the Salt Lake City PoliceDepartment. Note the department'sreadiness to fight the war.
