Show THEMEWhat is direction? It is both limitation and orientation. Without these components, confusion is the result.Without limitation man could not satisfy his immediate needs. He-would not be effective in his endeavors to change and control his environment and himself.Without orientation man is lost and a wanderer, with nothing to share, nothing to live for, nothing to protect. There is no order in what he does, no lasting foundation to what he builds. But there are human barriers which prevent men from adopting a uniform direction. Man's difficulty to communicate creates many conflicts. An innate selfishness mars his moral vision. These human barriers bear significantly on the question of man's direction. Can he limit himself without being selfish and too self-protective ? Can he orient himself to universal values if he has difficulty communicating what they are? With an idea and sense of his identity and purpose, man confronts reality. From the past he discovers a path and a norm, a charged conscience. Then he looks to the green future. It is a need of man to be daring. He must forever dare to be a two-headed monster looking backward with pity and forward with fear; and from this purging stasis dare to move onward into the unkonwn.Lowell M. Uda |
