The banquet featured award presentations to oratory and essay contest winners and a lecture by Dr. G. Homer Durham, president of- Arizona State University.Dr. Durham commented on the University's leadership qualities and its outpost in Africa where Harold W. Bentley, dean of the Extension Division, is now serving.Four outstanding alumni awards were presented. They went to Dr. Alex Obald, vice-president and research director of N. W. Kellog Co. in New York; Dr. Leon L. Waiters, chemist, inventor,philanthropist, arid biographer; Mrs. Ar-della BitnerTibby, national authority on school financing and Mrs. Helen Spencer Williams, local editor, church and civic worker.Richard McMillin placed first in the junior-senior division while Lee Caldwell came in second. Jay Bodine took top honors in the freshman-sophomore division, and Christina Nelson and Sidney Gold tied for second place. The first winners were awarded prizes of $100 and the second-place winners each received $50 prizes.120 |
