Already hand-picked for the Orange Bowl, the Buffs were looking forward to their first unbeaten season in twenty-five years. But the hungry Utes saw their chance for glory and took it. Playing near-perfect football, Nagel's marvels of inconsistency rose from the depths of their most recent humiliation to thoroughly trounce the astonished Buffs 21-12. Ute captain Gordy Lee, pound for pound the toughest and smartest football player in the west and Gary Hertzfelt, most promising of the newcomers, paced the scoring while Ed Pine and Marv Fleming were linemen who anchored the defense.Next to invade Ute Stadium were the traditional rivals from Logan - Utah State's powerful Aggies. Unbeaten in nine games and looking for a major bowl bid, the farmers had little difficulty remembering who spoiled their only other chance for an unbeaten season. But this was the year for the Aggies as they used their huge line to completely stifle the Ute offense and walk away with a well-deserved win. The turning point in their 17-6 victory came in the third quarter when little Tommy Larscheid shook off a dozen Ute tacklers and sped 85 yards to paydirt in the most exciting run of the season. |
