Show Land - Mesa Verde - 475 Nov. 26, 1901 Smith, Joseph O., Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Major Geo. W. Stouch, Darlington, Oklahoma Permission is granted to Mr. Seymour Price and his party to spend a few weeks at the reservation. There is nothing of interest on the reservation except the ruins of the cliff dwellers, " which are in a very rough mountainous country, thirty miles from a railroad." Mar. 24, 1903 (?), Acting Commissioner Letter to J. O. Smith, Agent Agent received information and letter of instructions for conducting negotiations with the Weeminuche band for the relinquishment to the U. S. of a tract of land known as the Mesa Verde. After negotiations, a report is made to Secretary of the Interior. Mar. 24, 1903 Smith, Joseph O., Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Virginia McClurg Agent informs Mrs. McClurg that he cannot approve Mesa Verde land lease because signatures were not obtained during council. During last council Indians refused to sign the lease. Lease must also be in accordance with the instructions of the Department. 1904 (?), Superintendent, Ft. Lewis School, Breen, CO Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs The superintendent sends a map of the Mesa Verde land of the Southern Ute Reservation.
