Navajos have surrounded several white families. Scene of trouble seventy miles south west of this agency. My indian chief offers their friendly officers. They exert strong restraining influence with Navajos. Shall I take them with me. Will be discreet & hope to avoid blood shed. Answer at once." The Navajos are about to break out & have sent word to the governors of New Mexico & Colorado for aid but we must have help before their aid arrives. Ute Indians have been leaving the reservation in great numbers to hunt. He praises the Southern Utes for their excellent behavior and their willingness to do as the government asks. In the recent confrontation between the Navajo and white settlers, the So. Ute were willing to take up arms to protect the settlers.
