Lawton reports meeting with Indians shows them to be peaceful and intending to stay in the area, still refuse to believe orders to return to the reserve. Sending troops to remove the Indians will be costly and create suffering. NA/ RG 75 Dec. 13, 1894 Day, David F., Indian Agent, So. Ute Agency Telegram to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Col. Lawton and Agent Day arrived in Monticello and found Gov. West and his staff there. Utes found to be friendly. Ignacio refuses to believe orders about them returning has been issued. Col. Indians are not as threatening nor do they wish to create trouble. Lawton does hot want troop intervention since Ignacio and band are returning to the reservation. Endorsements attached. Lawton from Monticello, Utah, indicates that Chief Ignacio and his band will return at once to the reservation, supplies for them and stock will be provided and weather conditions makes travel dangerous.
