Show PROPOSAL Sanpete county is currently facing extreme economic distress due to the recent closure of several businesses as well as the decline in the farm inco~e. We therefore propose that it is time for the citizens of the county to come together,and build upon their own strength and creativity to solve their own economic problems and Indeed build their own financial success. A brief background behind the forllulatlon of the company will explain ~otlves and goals more fully. When the Sperry Un I va c. These were good jobs with ~any benefits and no one could have foreseen the problem that Sperry would eventually face of overwhelming foreign competition. When the parent company no longer felt it could keep this plant In Ephraill, four hundred people lost their jobs. Its effect was devastating Impact in the county, even Ilore then the closure of Geneva Steel did in Utah County. Thanks to the efforts of prillarily one forller Sperry worker who wanted to gain and education and skill level sufficient to get a new job, two government programs offering free schooling and benefits were made available to these displaced workers nearly ninety people took advantage of the courses offered at Snow College. In ~eet these non-traditional student's needs a club; called the Second Time Around Club, was start-ed. One of Its primary goals was to promote economic stability for Sanpete County. As it evolved Into a larger Idea, the Initials, STA were re-named to read the Sanpete Trade Association in regards to it economic endeavors. Through ~ucb effort and work, 8nd building on the wise words of Governor Scott Mathesen,who laid that the way up was to build on the strengths of our area, the idea of association has slowly capitalized. In accessing the strengths of our county, we find they lay In three basic areas: 1. A large number of people gifted In the arts 80d crafts. 2. A tremendous potential for Increased tourism-based ~ a I n I yon a nab un dan ceo f b u f 1 d I o'g s 0 f ear 1 y -II 0 r II 0 n his tor I cal architecture still standing and the natural resources of our high Ilountain valley has to offer, Including the right configuration of our Ilountains for cross-country skiing, snowmobile runs,backpacking trips, Ilountain trails. 3. A respected college with great potential for education, not only our youth but our older citizens as well, and good Intelligent youth who need the opportunity to work and fain training In our valley.
