Dallas Purcell in connection with the restorat'ion of the old Relief Society and Grain Mill buildings on North Main in Ephraim, Utah on saturday, May 24th. The following will summarize our discussions and the results of our inspection: CU -DD. 1. The present ~~~~~ building is capable of structural rehabilitation without excessive cost to extend its structural life for a long period of years. The essential items of work necessary to accomplish this can be briefly outlined as follows: (a) Install steel tension members within the building exterior walls at the second floor and roof soffit levels across the west front wall and along the north and south walls easterly to points yet to be determined, possibly as far as the east wall. (b) Install one pair of horizontal steel tension members parallei'to and centered vertically upon the horizontal axis center-line of each bottom chord truss member. These must engage IIheel ll plates to be fitted around the lower ends of and/or bolted to the sloping top chord members. This assembly must also provide a positive connection to the top of the supporting wall in a manner to transmit horizontal as vertical forces that may arise from seismic (earthquake) or wind forces. , (c) The broken bottom chord of one of the roof trusses will require IIspicing ll in the sense that an appearance of strength must be restored by the addition of a replacement timber section in the space occupied by the broken bottom chord. The total tension acting on this chord will, however, be resisted by the steel tensile members described in (b) above. (d) Existing roof sheathing and supporting roof purlins appear to be satisfactory subject to more detailed inspection from ladders and scaffolding. The collapsed section in one portion of the roof south of the ridge line is readily capable of r e pair. However, a rigid membrane over the entire roof surface is needed to insure lateral stability and transfer of lateral |
