National Trust for Historic Preservation August 17, 1987 Tom Carter Utah state Historical Society Preservation Research Office 300 Rio Grande Salt Lake City, UT 84101 Dear Tom: Thanks for the background information on the Ephraim Coop. Wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that I was encouraged by our recent meetings in Ephraim. Craig Call and I met with about twenty people--members of the newly-formed Sanpete Trade Association (STA) with Board members from eight major towns in Sanpete County, Sanpete Historical Society, Marge Bennion and Len Faucit. By the end of the meeting, I think we had reached consensus that the next step is a Preservation Services Fund grant to fund a strategic plan for STA outlining their rehabilitation plan for the Coop, marketing strategy for Coop rehab and Sanpete tourism initiative, and identification of possible funding sources for the Coop rehab and tourism program. After the plan is completed, Craig Call is also willing to meet with them, if needed, to talk about development and marketing strategies. After talking with Craig, I agreed that Snow College is actually a very unlikely candidate to sponsor the rehab because they do not have a facilities need, and required approval for su c h a project would have little li k elihood in the State Legisl aL ure at this time. STA is not the same organization as Mr. Nibley's former association and actually has begun to build a fairly broad base of support. While in Ephraim, we had dinner with the Ephraim mayor and three of five City Council members at Mrs. Bennion's house I think we "planted the seed" that the Coop may have potential as part of a county-wide effort to promote heritage tourism. I certainly tried to pound in the economic benefits of preservation and the role of historic sites in tourism in all of our meetings that day.
