Show t i a' THE MILLING INDUSTRY OF EPHRAIM. UTAH i." :1 ~I . ~ !, i' When the Pioneers chose a town~site. o~e of the first requirements was a stream to drive a grist mill. The milling industry of Ephraim is probably the oldest industry of the city. It was begun in the early sixties. with Tommy Thorpe at its head. He built a Burr Mill in the southeast section of town. on the old Her,mansen lot. Part of the mill still stands as the back of the house. Later another mill was built one-half mile up the creek. near Guard Knoll. This Mill was built .by Niels Thompson. Henry Beal. Peter Greaves and Christian Willardson. all pioneers of the town. Tnese two mills ' served the ' community' for many years. In the early nineties some of these pioneers butlt (:mother mtll east of town by what is known as Mill Hill. It was called The Climax Roller Mill. All three of these mills were driven by water power. " ! In the year 1901 a Mormon convert. Marcus Hermansen. came to Ephraim. His fam~ ily consisted of nine boys and two girls. He p~rchased the Climax Roller Mill. and until Two I .-1 1914 he and his boys operated the mill . ..At this time the mill was moved to town, into the old Relief Society granary. on First North and Main streets. The mill has been driven by electric power since that time. The Hermansen hoys went into business for themselves. and most of them are still operating mills throughout the state. " I ,. I s I r I ing the next years. finally going to the HerAnd the name was changed to The Ephraim Milling &Elevator Co. Since 1933 it has heen operated by Lawrence Hermanlen. It has continually grown, keeping pace with the times. Now it includes the old Co-op Store and other additions. The granary and the store are sturdy pioneer structures of rock. The mill now manufactures grade 'A' flour called "Velvet." feed for poultry and livestock. It contains a steam roller, mixers. hammer mills. etc., capable of serving the people of Sanpete County for their milling needs.
