Show 147 The President reported that he had received a communication from the fam ily of the late Miss iggE/FR Joanne Howald, University stud ent, who died last £23341?) month, acknowledging the University's helpfullness at that time, For the purpose of information, the Pres ident read the following letter from Mr. George D. Clyde : LETTER CONCERNING ECHO PARK February 4:, 1954 DAM FROM COMMISSIONER OF Dr. A" Ray Olpin, President University of Utah Salt Lake City, Utah INTERSTATE STREAMS FOR UTAH Dear President Olpin: The hearings on the Colorado River Storage Project and Its Participating Projects before the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs have now been completed, I Wish to take this opportunity to express to you my personal appreciation for the letters which were received from five of the departments at the University. These letters were specific and to the point and I feel, in full harmony with the interests of the State of Utah, They were introduced at the hearings for use of the House Committee and are made a part of their files. The fight is not yet over. If this bill is passed, then we will have to secure appropriations necessary to carry out the intent of the bill, Our principal fight, I feel, is going to be on the floor of the House where the attack by the so-called conservationists and nature lovers will be concentrated on the Echo Park Dam, In my opinion, the Echo Park Dam is the key to the whole project and without it, the development of the Upper Colorado River Basin will be meager and peacemeal. Yours sincerely, George D. Clyde Commissioner of Interstate Streams for Utah |
