Show January 11, 1954, inasmuch as the President was not in attendance, due to illness. Regent Culp moved that the recommendation tabled at the meeting of December 28, 1953, now be brought up for consideration, which'was seconded by Regent Eccles and carried. A discussion of the question followed, during which the President stated his proposal follows the practice of most major universities and conforms with recommendations of administrative experts with a high reputation in their fields. President Olpin also pointed out that the Dean of Students is concerned to a large extent with problems of counselling, discipline, student health, housing, and public relations, and many of the functions of this Office do not properly relate to the Office of the Academic Vice President. The discussion continued for some time, with Regents expressing their views for and against the question. Several expressed the opinion that the Regents should not consider the Booz, Allen and Hamilton report as infallible. Regent Bennion felt that the Board members were in need of enlightenment on what they are trying to do with the recommendations made in the Booz, Allen and Hamilton report, and that there would be a close division if a vote were taken today on the ques tion before the Board. |
