Show Inter- Tribal Relations - 367 In response to Bowman's recent letter, Patten has asked Major Hall, Commanding, Fort Lewis, to aid him in returning any Utes that have left the reservation. He comments that from 8 to 85 Navajo Indians come almost weekly to trade at the reservation store. He asks that Bowman also try to keep the Navajos from trespassing on Ute land. Sept. 3, 1884 Bowman, John H., Indian Agent, Navajo Agency Report of Agents Report of the Secretary of the Interior Bowman submits his annual report to the commissioner of Indian Affairs. They had 31 horses stolen by white men, but they hope to get at least a part of them back. Nov. 8, 1884 Carlisle, Edmund S. Letter to Major Hall Reports that Southern Utes and Navajos are in the area between the Ute reservation and the Blue Mountains and the La Sal Mountains and that they will surely cause trouble with the cowboys in the region.
