Show Record and we wanted to go to the east bank because a man had one of his horses get away from him and called to us as we were going up the river; we got his horse and towed it to the bank for him and got stuck while taking the horse to a point where it could get out. In thus landing we went out of the channel. Aside from that incident the boat was not stuck on any bars at any place. 5438 As I recall I took this trip in July or August. As a result of my investigation I took some stock in there and remained there for about three years. During that time I made one other motor trip down there with Mr. Anderson. Mr. Anderson took several loads of supplies down to Townsite Bottom for me and on this one occasion I was with him. Mr. Anderson was paid for the services thus rendered. I also made one trip down there in a row 5439 boat belonging to a man named Wheeler. I obtained this boat at his cabin, located four or five miles below the town of Green River, and took supplies down with me on that trip. I then brought the boat back up and returned it to Mr. Wheeler. On the upstream trip I rowed and poled the boat and do not recall doing any towing. I had tried to buy the boat from Mr. Wheeler but he didn't want to sell it and loaned it to me with the understanding that I would bring it back. That was my reason for making the upstream boat trip instead of riding my horse, as I would have preferred. 5440 I recall encountering no serious difficulties in coming upstream with that boat other than the work incident to rowing and poling. Going upstream I was always hunting the short, easy way; man is naturally lazy; the river meanders from bank to bank, and I would try to go across, sometimes being able to and sometimes not being able to do so. As a result of this I was hung up on sand bars on the upstream trip. On the downstream trip I encountered no diffi-culties and did no get hung up on any sand bars. On the trip I have mentioned when I went with Mr. A. I. Anderson, his motor boat was not hung up on any sand bars and so far as I am aware did not strike any sand bars. We took that trip |
