Show Record substantially the same place each succeeding year. Should you go 4248 down the river in July of one year and not go down again until July of the next year, you would find the channel in approximately 4249 the same situation. We will find the channel changed in the straight stretches of the river from one side entirely to the other in different 4250 years. On that river the sand is constantly cutting, even when the water is going down to its very lowest stage, even then it is cutting the high bars, the sand is changing, then as it cuts it changes the channel. the fact that I might have been going up and down the river during the months of June, July, August and September would not help me at all if I had to go down in October, although I would look in those places for the channel where I had found it before. I would naturally look where I had seen the last 4251 channel, because I would expect to find it there. Whether it changed or not, I would look for it there first. I would use my 4252 experience and pick out the channel. I would expect to find the 4253 channel where I last saw it. In a long, straight stretch of the river the channel is generally broken. It will follow first one side part way and gradually shift across, many little streams, to the other side. Where there is not a braided channel, but just one stream of water, the deep part of the river is sometimes along the bank, sometimes in the middle and sometimes on the other side. On a curve the deep water is usually on the outside of the curve. 4254 On a long curve the channel is not on the outside all the way. At places it will be on the inside of the curve. A man who has know-ledge of the river is of value in navigating. Where the curve is short you will find the channel almost always on the outside of the curve and that is true every year, and is a characteristic of 4255 the river as I have know it through all those years. Where the river is of average width and is running through a country where it cannot spread out and does not spread out over a great width, you do not have any trouble with boats of the drafts I have seen used on the Green River.
