Show Record that year 4568 While I was at Honaker trail I saw a party or two going down the river in boats. None go up. that winter I went overland 4569 to Bluff. I was back placer mining on the San Juan after that. During the four years I spent down there I spent some time placer mining each year. It seems to me I was placer mining on the San 4570 Juan in July and August 1897. I was back at Zahns Camp in 1898. I do not remember that we had a boat there that year. I have not placered there since 1898. I then went into cattle raising and ceased to operate in mining business. Besides operating a raft at Honaker trail and the boat at Zahns Camp, I had a raft once in the Soda Basin country, which was the spring after I was first at Honaker trail. I went from bluff to Soda Basin with burros. Soda Basin is about 17 or 18 miles from Bluff. I built the raft to cross the river back and forth. I have also crossed many times at Bluff in boats, that is, a boat maintained there by the traders. I think I have now given you all my experience on the San Juan River in boats. 4572 I take ladies with me on my trips into the San Juan country. I act as guide and take camp equipment. I have crossed the San Juan river on horseback at Bluff by myself. I have crossed at Bluff and below Bluff a good many times when it was not necessary to swim my horses. I have crossed the San Juan just below Sand Island, five miles below Bluff, by myself. I have crossed there when it was not necessary to swim my horses. 4574 I have crossed at the mouth of Chinle with a party. It did not swim my horses. I have crossed at Mexican Hat on the bridge and in the water with horses. I did not swim my horses. I have crossed at Clay Hill Crossing by myself and with parties. Once or twice I swum my horses, and sometimes I didn't. I have crossed at Clay Hill Crossing twenty times. |
