Show Record in the spring and the river was reasonable high. 5441 In 1921 I was with a United States Geological Survey party in charge of Mr. Chenoewith. We started from be the town of Green River, Utah, Messrs. LaRue, Page and I, leaving Green River ahead of the rest of the party. The three of us rode in an eighteen foot boat specially constructed go go through the cataracts. It 5442 was decked over, having one cock pit in it. The survey began at the junction of the rivers. On our way from the town of Green River to the junction Mr. Page, who was a geologist, would want to stop and go and examine any formations that interested him and we stopped and landed quite a number of times. I was a rod man After we arrived at the junction three other boats came down with 5443 the rest of the party. ( It is stipulated that the witness would identify members of the party in the same was as was done by government witnesses who testified concerning this trip.) We left Green River about September 1 and arrived at Lee's Ferry in December. In making the topographic survey on which we were engaged the two rodmen would take positions as required; at times one man was used on one side of the river and one man on the other side of the river; at other times we would criss- cross back and forth; 5444 Most of the time each of the rod men had a boat and would go from point to point in our boats; we would have to cross the river, although sometimes we would word half a day on one side. I have on occasion walked out into the river as far I could wade and swan the rest of the way. On our trip down the Green River to the head of the Catar-acts, we did not encounter any sand bars and there are no sand bars in Cataract Canyon; the water in Cataract Canyon is so swift that it cleans out the sand bars. From the foot of Cataract Canyon 5445 down to the Utah- Arizona state line our boats frequently were stuck on sand bars and between Green River and the junction the boat would, of course, get stuck on a sand bar on the occasions |
