Show Record it was too awkward to handle on that river, too much draft 4219 and too heavy. It drew, I think, in the neighborhood of two feet at the stern. Between Greenriver and the mouth of the San Rafael we grounded three or four times but not very bad. The boat carried equipment to assist in getting off sand bars. I cannot recall that that equipment was used in Labyrinth Canyon. It was used 4220 above there a time or two. We encountered sand bars in Labyrinth Canyon and in Stillwater Canyon. We got off of them by using levers, That is, small poles, three or four inches in diameter. 4221 I believe we took the City of Moab down to the head of the cataracts, and then turned around and came up the Colorado as far as the Slide. We did not get by the Slide and then turned around and came back to Greenriver. We did not have so much work coming up the Green River. When we would hang on a bar we could get off easier, back away from it. We were possibly 6 or 7 days coming back. We stopped 4222 the boat at Halverson's ranch coming back because we couldn't get over the shallow water above. At Halverson's ranch we remodeled the City of Moab and turned it into a steam boat. At first it had a two cylinder gasoline engine, twin propellers. We also put on a paddle wheel. we renamed the boat, Cliff Dweller. After the boat 4223 was remodeled I took it from Halverson's ranch to Greenriver Town. I had a little trouble on that trip but I should not have had any trouble because there was lots of water. I made a trip in Captain Yokey's boat called the " Black Eagle" from Greenriver to Valentines Bottom. We had difficulty because the power was not sufficient and the draft was too deep. We blow out tubes on the engine. The draft on the boat was 12 4224 inches with the small load we had. In 1906 I made a trip from Greenriver, Utah, to the head of the cataracts in a boat belonging to a man named Oppenheimer, which was 27 feet long and 61/ 2 foot beam, with a 14 horse- power gasoline engine, propelled by a stern paddle wheel, draft about 8 4225 inches. It was later called the " Paddy Ross". On that trip we hung up on sand bars, but we pushed off. The boat was light and |
