Show Record out- board motor, so we took two boats and lashed them together. I took both of those boats to the junction. There I left rwo of the party and took two to Moab. I was two days going up. The Standard oil trip was just a one day trip for me. I had a boat that belonged to them, another out- board motor roe boat. No one helped the boat. We did not get this boat to Moab. About 12 or 14 miles above the junction of the rivers on the Green we had a fire on the boat that burned out one side. We put canvas on that side and got down from the Shafer well. Five of us went up stream in an out- board motor boat, except the Slide. One man rowed the boat around the Slide while the others walked. It took all the capacity of this boat for us to ride in it. There were not two inches sticking out when all of us were loaded in it. We did not feel like trying to ride through the Slide with all of us in it, but we rode the rest of the way up to the oil well. It was in 1915 when I first went down to Hite, but I eventually went clear through to Lees Ferry with Mr. LaRue and Mr. Richardson. We did not take a boat on that trip. We bought on at Hite. The next time I was down in Glenn Canyon was in 1921. I don't remember whether the boats were taken from Green River then. They come overland from some point. I had no contract with the government to haul in the supplies. I was working for days wages. When the government first hired me my services included freighting the supplies from the point I got them. I eventually took charge of moving some stuff from 4837 Greenriver, that was hauled overland. We did not take them down the river because we were afraid of the cataracts. I have never been through Cataract canyon. In the operation of boats on those rivers I have never had any trouble with my motors on account of gettings and in the bearings. Sand does not get in the bearings. It simply wears out 712 |
