Show Record Prior to that time I had done some hauling into Hite. 5149 When I first went in there for Mr. Stanton I operated a drill in there, prospecting the river, in 1899. I hauled this drill to the river and the material for their barge and boats. We got our freight at Greenriver, Utah, on the railroad. Besides Mr. Stanton, I hauled for the Cass Hite Company. I did bot bring the grain for my horses from Greenriver. My grain came from Loa in Wayne County. 5150 When I was in there in 1916 there were prospectors working in a good many different places up and down the river in a small 5151 way. Mr. Kimball and Mr. Turner had a plant. There wasn't any one outside of Turner and Kimball. There were a lot of them working below there in the Hanson Creek country. I did not know any of them outside of Chaffin and Donnett. A. L. Kroeger testified for defendant in direct examination as follows: 5152 I reside at Durango, Colorado. I am a civil engineer. I lived in Durango about twenty years and in that vicinity about forty- four years. I am familiar with the San Juan basin and water shed in eastern Utah, New Mexico and Colorado. I have been over practically all of that country. I am familiar with the timber areas in that section of the country and with the cuttings of timber that have occurred in the past. I know of my own knowledge the location and 5153 approximate areas of those timbered areas. As to the exact areas and amount of cutting I have verified my personal knowledge by interviews with the employees of lumber companies who kept the records of those companies and have accurate detail information. I made personal surveys of the so- called Dolores River project. I spent part of three years on that work. I know from my own knowledge of that country and the surveys made, the location and amount of land that can be reached by gravity flow of water 770 |
