Show Record George H. Dern testified on redirect examination as follows: 5384 I have lived in the State of Utah for thirty- five years. For a considerable period I was a state senator and since statehood I have kept in intimate touch with the public affairs of Utah. I know of no money ever having been appropriated by the state and know of no work ever having been done by the state or by the Federal government or by any other agency in improving navigation on either the Green or Colorado or San Juan Rivers. 5385 I have visited a great many of the scenic sections of the West to which tourists go in considerable numbers, including Zion National Park, Bryce's Canyon National Park, Yellowstone 5386 National Park and a number of places in California. Having in mind the other parks and show places to which I have referred, it is my opinion that the scenery on the lower Colorado River and also on the Colorado River below Moab upon which we took the boat trips referred to by me is outstanding; and if it were developed so as to be easy and convenient for people to make such a trip, it would be a very popular and attractive trip. We discussed that question while going down the Colorado River and decided that it was one of the finest pieces of scenery in the world. The ob-servations I have made apply to both a stretches of the Colorado River over which I made my boat trips. Thomas Varley testified for defendant on direct examination as follows: 5426 I reside in Salt Lake City and am a mining and metallurgical engineer, having followed that profession since 1899. I am now associated with the Big Indian Copper Company, which is operat-ting the Big Indian mine. That property is low grade copper deposit in sandstone, the copper being disseminated in the form of azurite and malachite, with occasional cuprite and some metallic copper. As long as twenty- five years ago they sank shafts at various places on the property and ran several tunnels. About five 825 |
