Show Record opposite my place and looking toward my house. Oppenheimer's boat, the Wilmont, the scows the Cliff Dweller, City of Moab, 5372 Colorado and various row boats are shown in Exhibit 32 J. Probably some of the row boats were ours. I happened to get that picture when there were a lot of boats at my place in 1909 or 1910 and the two sections appearing on two pages are parts of the same picture. 5373 I have made a study of the ruins of the Cliff Dwellers along the Green and Colorado Rivers. They were no Indians, the skull of the Cliff Dweller being rounder and what one would say better balanced than the skull of the Indian. Cliff Dwellers had thirty- two teeth, the Indian only twenty- eight. The hands of the Cliff Dweller were broader and heavier than those of the Indians. The Cliff Dweller, so far as we are able to determine, were a strictly agricultural people, this conclusion being arrived at from the implements they left in their store rooms and their farms. 5374 We frequently found their farming implements and several of the bottom lands have small reservoirs, the walls of which still remain, and in a number of instances the old ditch line is still very plain. It is my conclusion that the Cliff Dweller certainly used the river because their store houses are often placed in a canyon where there is no other method of approach and at points absolutely inaccessible except by boats is from the river. There are points where there were ladders or foot holds up and down from the river, but those marks could only be reached along the river. For instance their store houses in Stillwater Canyon are at place where the walls are small like the wall of this room on both sides; we will find a small opening in one wall or the other where a store house is built; usually these store houses are built fifty, one hundred or two hundred feet above the ground? 5387 I ceased carrying freight and passengers in my boats for compensation late in 1912 because I couldn't make it pay. When I say I couldn't make it pay, I mean that we did not receive money 816 |
