Show Record which trips were for compensation. The Copper Company built another power boat called the Colorado in 1905 or 1906 and we used the old seven and a half horsepower engine that had been in the 5347 Wilmont for power in the Colorado. I recall making a number of trips in the Colorado down to the head of Stillwater Canyon, but that boat was not a success from a navigation standpoint, having too light a frame. I sacrificed much to a light Draft and the vi-bration was too great when the engine was running. I believe the copper company quit operating there in 1908. During the years 1905, 1906 and 1907 I made other trips than those I have mentioned for compensation with the Wilmont and Colorado. I remember one trip, for instance, that I made in the Colorado with a party of hunters down the river forty miles below, and I made a number of trips with tourists and hunters on 5348 the Wilmont. These trips were all made for compensation. We fre-quently took a scow loaded with supplies down to Townsite Bottoms, would land them there and then go on to the head of the cataracts with the motor boat; when our supplies were exhausted we would come back and get some more at Townsite Bottoms, leaving the scow there as a sort of base for our supplies. At the end of the trip we would push the scow back up the river. In handling a scow with 5349 the power boat we would always push the scow. If you tow the scow when you come to a short turn in the river it is likely to drag you off your course, but if you push it you can get behind it and keep it in the channel. After the winter of 1907- 1908 of 1908- 1909, when the ice ran out in the spring, the Wilmont was caught and damaged in the ice so that the hull became leaky and we tock the machinery out. Then we built the Navajo, which was twenty- two feet long, with a five foot beam and draft empty of eighteen inches, the draft loaded being anywhere below three feet. We often had it loaded 5350 so that its draft was close to three feet. W installed in the Navajo the seven and a half horsepower engine that we had take |
