Show Record the Strauss party as they went down the river past the Moquie Bar. There were two or three boats in that party and they had some load. Later I went down the river to a point about a mile below Hall's Crossing where the Strauss party was located and saw them there. I have rafted timber from Moquie Canyon to the Stanton 5316 dredge and had no trouble with our rafts. This rafting was done in May and June, when the water was high. Each of the years that I have thus far mentioned I went our from the river. Between 1900 and 1901 I was away from the river from some time in July until December, when I remained for a few days, and then I came back in 1901 about April. Somewhere about the spring of 1901 I helped Mr. Bennett build a raft and boat and we took machinery, groceries and grain down to the Olympia Bar. Later I rafted some timber from the 5317 mouth of Tickaboo down to Olympia Bar. This rafting was done in May when the water was high. This rafting happened to be done at high water because we needed the timber at that time. The only difference between rafting then and at the lowest stage of water would have been that you would have had to build the raft lighter and larger when the water was at its lowest stage. I was on the river in 1902 but didn't work there at that 5318 time. I saw Stanton's party go down the Colorado River, posting notices on their claims. During the years that I was on the Colorado River, I frequently made trips up and down the river fifteen 5319 or twenty miles each way from where we were working. I made some trips up as far as Dandy Crossing, thirty- five miles from Moquie Bar and thirty miles from Olympia. Part of the time I was in there I worked for myself, and I also worked for Mr. Stanton's Company when I was at the dredge and I worked for the Moquie Mining Company at Olympia Bar. While I was at the Moquie Bar I worked for L. M. Chaffin. In 1899, 1900 I was L. M. Chaffin's 804 |
