Show Record up from the river. I personally only saw the one raft that I 5186 brought down on the river. Montgomery's carpenter shop was a portion of my blacksmith shop. There was lumber hauled from the river there at Moab to the people of Moab before I took my raft down, which was in August, 1898. Branson brought some down before that and he brought several rafts down after that. I would say that the practice of hauling lumber up from the river continued from eight to ten years. It occurred every summer. There was no other way to get the lumber to Moab except 5188 by raft. Thomas G. Wimmer, recalled, and testified on examination by Special Master as follows: I remember testifying as to comparative costs between taking supplies down the river on the Richardson party and taking supplies overland to some place. I would not be sure that I based my estimate of costs on the river on a five day round trip. I think it was longer than that. In my statement to the government I said the round trip took seven or eight days. I will tell you why that is: The boys, when they come to town each time from my ranch, would not go directly back; somebody name up and reported to 5189 me on the proceeds of the trip. It would be seven or eight days before they would take another trip, but the actual running time is about five days to the ranch. 777 1898 |
