Show Record district engineer instead of taking the somewhat smaller area as 5162 shown by the records of the Country assessors. The area colored yellow represents acreage that is lower in elevation than a certain reservoir site on the Dolores River. and there is no portion of that acreage colored yellow on the map that could not be reached by gravity flow from the proposed reser-voir. The soil within the area colored yellow is a red loam soil, most of it large sagebrush mesas sloping to the southwest. The depth of the soil varies from nothing to ten or twelve feet and is underlaid by a strata of sandstone. In the course of my practice I have more or less for the last twenty years studied soils and familiarized myself with the duty of water on various types of soil. From my knowledge, information, experience and familiarity with the area that I have colored yellow on the map, I estimate that one and a quarter acre feet would be ample for the irrigation of that land. Immediately east of the lands colored yellow there are some lands that are irrigated with very similar soil con- - ditions, and in that particular section it was estimate that one and a quarter acre feet per acre was requited. The reservoir project on the Dolores River was designed 5165 to store 185,000 acre feet. A 215 foot dam was contemplated. It was estimated that there would be about 350,000 acre feet available from the Dolores River. The plan was to have a reservoir that would hold 185,000 acre feet, but it was contemplated to irrigate more than 185,000 acres of land by using the direct flow from the river as well as the storage flow. From an engineering standpoint 5166 it was feasible to make use of the entire 350,000 acre feet. The one and one- quarter acre feet is a pretty low duty of water, in comparison with other portions of the basin, but the character of the soil and mesas are entirely different from most any other portions. As you get farther east you get a heavy adobe soil or river bottoms that are very gravelly and which require 773 |
