Show Record the Lasal mountains called the Big Indian. I can only give the 5060 rate charged approximately. Mr. Clark told me the other day we were hauling coal down there now for fuel. We get $ 16.00 for the coal delivered down there when there is no back haul. when we have a back haul of concentrate it is $ 12.00 a ton. The coal comes from Sego, Utah, five miles north of Thompson. It comes 5061 into Thompson on the train. All the time that I have been in Moab I have never known of any freight being transported on the river other than that which was taken in the boats of the Moab Garage Company. I do not recall of any to amount to anything. The merchants of Moab never used the river to bring in their supplies or to take them out. We raise considerable grain there in Moab. It is not 5062 shipped out. They feed most of it there. We ship some wool, fruit, turkeys and hogs from Moab. It is taken out of Moab in our trucks and trucks owned by the individuals there. None of it is shipped out any place on the river. 5063 The smaller boats were built after the barge. The passengers carried down on the small boats were oil men and geolo-gists who came in from the outside and were there temporarily. The investigations of the oil men and geologists continued over a per-iod of about 27 months, and then it kind of died down. We did most 5064 of our passenger business after that well came in down there. The passengers were carried down for compensation at different charges according to the distance we took them. To Shafer No. 1 well we charged about $ 20.00 a day for the boat. Where one or two passen-gers went, $ 2.50 each way. We charged $ 20.00 if they just took the boat, that is, after we made the Chandler boat. We charged more than that for the Punkin Seed boat. To Shafer No. 2 well we charged about $ 25.00 for the Chandler boat and $ 3.00 each way 5065 for an individual. We had a minimum charge for any one trip. Twenty- five dollars was as cheap as we could go to Shafer No. 2 well with the Chandler boat, whether we had one passenger or seven. To Lockhart the charge generally was $ 20.00 a day. |
