Show Record supplies and went back to camp. I made two round trips. In going up stream we rowed and towed and sailed when the wind was favorable. I am familiar with some of the rapid water on the Green River. I tried sailing up it but was never able to sail over it. In going over the rapid water with the row boats, if it was too hard to row, we would get out and tow. We towed up through the Slide. We did not get supplies at any other places except Greenriver and 4880 Moab. The trips were taken during the months of August, September, October and November. The motor boat trip I took was on the Green River in Mr. Wolverton's boat named the Wilmont, a side wheel motor boat. We started first from Greenriver with Mr. Oppenheimer in a stern- wheel boat. Something went wrong with the machinery just above the 4881 Wimmer ranch, and we couldn't fix it. We then floated on down to Mr. Wolverton's place. He was then living just below the Wimmer ranch. Mr. Wolverton then took us on down and brought us back. He took us down to the head of the cataracts and brought us back as far as his place. We then hired at team at the Wimmer ranch. The purpose of that trip was to take some people from Indiana down the river to show them the land down there. The idea was to irrigate that land from the river and raise stock on it. There are 4882 several large bottoms down there, one called the Townsite Bottom, and one called the Phil Foote bottom. The Phil Foote bottom contains several hundred acres. I estimated the Valentine bottom at around 1000 acres. The Townsite bottom contains three or four hun-dred acres. Then there is the grassy bottom. I don't remember 4883 whether that is larger or smaller than the other. There is one large bottom below the junction and above the head of the cataracts. I would say it was about a half mile square. I inspected those bottoms as to their susceptibility to irrigation and use for growing crops. The soil is the finest soil in the world . I took samples of the soil. They are not so situated that water could be taken to them by gravity from the 720 |
