Show Record called the " Marguerite". It was 33 feet long and approximately 7 or 8 feet wide, and its draft was according to the load I put 4736 on it. It drew very light empty. It had a black line that was a foot draft. Mr. Wolverton estimated the boat to carry three tons on the river when we built it. He is an engineer. I don't know whether he estimated that foot line was the three ton mark or not. We have had more and had less than that on it. The sides were 3 feet. When we put more than 3 tons on it about 3 inches would be sticking out, so the draft with that load would be in excess of 4737 2 1/ 3 feet. It had a stern- wheel at one time, a propeller at another time, and side and stern- wheels at another time. As originally constructed it had a stern- wheel, seven feet in diameter. It was propelled by gas engine. The Marguerite was built either in 1906 or 1907 and I took my last trip in it in 1915. About the year 1910 I went into the general hauling delivery business in the town of Greenriver. 4738 I had advertisements of my business printed and circulated I solicited business on the river for river carriage and I engaged in that business. At a later time I moved from Greenriver to Crescent, 4739 which is about 25 miles off the river on the railroad. At Crescent I engaged in the hauling business. I hauled in the material for the Big Indian Copper Company. My two daughters took up homesteads there. Some cattle was shipped in and I had general charge of 4740 them. After I moved to Crescent my next river experience was on the lower Colorado with Mr. Trimble and Mr. Chenoewith in 1921. I bought the tract of land at the mouth of the San Rafael in 1906 and moved on it in February. I was on the lower Colorado in 1921, in 1922 and also in 4741 1923. In 1924 I made a visit to the Green River- Moab section with the Marlin Oil Company and made some trips during that year. 691 |
