Show Record Bluff I worked in a store. Along in 1893 a store was established at Rincon. I took some supplies from Bluff to Rincon down the 4588 river in a skiff. The skiff was 16 feet long, 8 feet wide and 18 inches high. On my first trip I took down 2000 pounds. I made a similar trip afterwards, that is, a skiff loaded with supplies, from Bluff to Rincon. As to difficulties or obstacles encountered, on one of the trips I went over sand waves for three or four hundred yards. They were quite difficult to ride. The skiff rode them by turning 4589 crosswise. I was right out in the middle of those sand waves. I had had some previous experience with boats but not with sand waves. There were no other difficulties encountered. I spent a couple of months at the store at Rincon. While there I saw a big raft go down the river past Rincon. The raft contained about 5000 feet belted together. There were five men riding it with some supplies on it. They appeared to have some poles or something to steer it with I knew one of the men on the raft. They were going down to Cable Camp. I knew that one of the Cable Camp party was in charge of the raft. It was in the spring of the year. I knew a placer miner by the name of Mendenhall. I worked for him at Gooseneck below Mexican Hat, at a place known as " Mendenhall Trail". I was at Bluff when he hired me. I rode a 4591 horse down. Mr. Mendenhall went down with a skiff. He had them those when I went to work for him. I worked at Mendenhall Camp for 4592 19 or 21 days. During my residence in Bluff I worked as clerk in Fred Adams' Store for two months during 1895. While there I sold supplies to miners who were working down the river. They loaded their supplies on wagons and took them down through a lane to the river. It was the road that leads down south of town to the river. I am 75 in April. 4593 I knew a man by the name of Rocky Powers. He we called " Old Rocky". I first met him at Dandy Crossing in 1891. I was then moving my family from Utah. Old Rocky lived in Bluff. He was |
