Show Record country, very level for our country, that is, it is rolling. In one end of the valley you can see for miles and miles through the valley. It is not cut up by those big gulches or sudden precipi- 4410 tous places that occur farther south. I have ridden the range there. It is what we term our winter range. In that country the summer range for cattle is the LaSal Mountains, the Blue Mountains and the Elk Ridge, and the winter range is dry valley, that is be-tween the LaSals and the Blues, and then on south after you drop down off the high country south of the Blues is winter range, and all the west, south and west part of the county is what we term our winter range. 4411 The general slope of the country is toward the north. Hatch wash runs through the valley and crains the country. It is not a deep wash. The valley slopes to that, it slopes from the north south and from the south north. The north slope is the long large slope. My best judgment is that off to the west there, towards the Colorado River, the land is not high enough, and there is not enough annual precipitation to permit of successful dry farming. It is very good grazing land, very good winter range. If water could be applied upon it, the soil is such a character that it 4412 would be tillable and would grow good crops, in my opinion. The area on Elk Ridge and in that section extending on south from there is the higher land, and the precipitation on the Elk Ridge is more than it is farther west or south. I have engaged in dry farming myself and have seen others do it, and in connection with my cattle keeping close touch with the growing of grain and feed of various kinds on the lands in that section of the 4413 country, and have done so for many years. On top of the Elk Ridge, I am sure there would be 100,000 acres of tillable ground susceptible to dry farming, but farther south than that it would not be dry farm, I am sure. I am familiar with the country east of the Blue Mountains 4414 and from there on east to the Colorado line. The section of country |
