Show Record I was not on the river continuously. We were on the river long enough to meander the banks of the river. Probably two months of that time was spent right on the river. My visit to the river ex-tended through the entire period. At Nokai I used the boat in crossing men and supplies and traveling up and down the river in the boat for three or four 4334 miles. I used the boat below Piute Mesa for crossing men and supplies and up and down the stream for three or four miles. Supplies were not carried up stream but the party used the boat going up. I returned to that section in December, 1925, and remained 4335 there until May, 1926, continuing the survey. My work was largely on and back from the rim on the second trip. There were very few places where it was practicable to use the boat so that it was accessible from the upland, but the boat was used where it was practicable so to do. The boat was a metal boat, 12 or 15 feet 4336 Long and 4 feet beam. The sides were about a foot and a half high. It was brought over from Kayonta with our supplies. Our sectionizing work did not go to the mouth of the San Juan. I have seen a large part of the San Juan River from Bluff clear to the mouth. I have had experience with motor boats on the Colorado 4337 River. I used motor boats on the Colorado during 1926 and 1927 almost daily from Moab to a point about 12 miles above the junction of the Green and the Colorado. From my knowledge and experience with motor boats and 4339 from my knowledge of the San Juan River, a motor boat could be run on those part of the San Juan River that I have been on with no great difficulty both up and down stream, at any time that I have 4340 been on the river. I have also been on the San Juan River at the mouth of Slick Horn Canyon, at the mouth of Grand Gulch, at the mouth of Navajo Canyon, and at the mouth of Comb Wash. These places are just about the same as the other places I have been on the river. |
