Show Record going from Greenriver to the junction and 6 or 8 days from the 4193 junction to Moab. 4194 The geological work was done in connection with studies of oil and gas possibilities. 4195 Joseph A. Rose testified for complainant on direct examination as follows: I live in Pennsylvania. I am 57. I went to the Town of Greenriver, Utah, in 1886, and remained there most of the time 4196 until 1916. My first trip on the Green River was made in 1889 with a flat bottom row boat, 16 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 6 or 7 4197 inches draft. There were two other boats a little large than mine. There were six of us. We went on a pleasure trip, huntting, and exploring. We went to a point called Horseshoe Canyon, about 50 miles below Greenriver. With reference to the operation of the boats, we made a lot of fun out of it and did not pay much attention to the work. Between Greenriver and the San Rafael we had difficulty in 4198 getting over shallow, gravel bars. We drifted onto the shallow bars and we would hang up. Sometimes we could stay in the boat and push off with our oars, other times we would have to get out in the water and push the boat off. We made the trip in September, the low stage of the water. We got the boats back up the river by rowing and towing 4199 I was next on the Green River in a boat in 1893, July. It was after the spring freshet and the water was going down. We had a flat bottom scow- shaped boat, 16 feet long and 3 1/ 2 feet wide, and 5 or 6 inch draft. We had probably 500 pounds. We were going 4200 down to work a prospect claim and got along very well on that trip. We hit some sand bars on the way. Sometimes we would push off with the oars and other times we would get out in the water and push off. We did not bring that boat back up the river. We had a better built 4201 boat down there and we brought that back. We rowed it and towed it. It happened to be down there because there was a family living far-ther down on Valentine's Bottom. I did not go down to Valentine's Bottom that time. The prospect we were working was probably 8 or |
