Show From the first recorded time that the eye of man scanned the rugged, majesticpeaks of the western mountains, these mighty fortresses of Nature have been at oncea challenge and an inspiration. - The tough Mountain Men of theearly 1800's, the hardy, devout Pioneers of 1847 and the generations who followedthem in carving homes out of the wilderness and making the desert blossom,all reflected the spirit of the Wasatch Mountains which form the backdrop of ourcommunities. For more than a century, the University of Utah has beena potent force in moulding the men who have built our state and nation. . Inthis nuclear-space age, the day of the covered wagon and the ox-drawn plowmay seem far away; yet the need for rugged character, for intellectual discipline andfor unswerving devotion to the ideals of truth and knowledge are the same todayas they were a century - or a millenium - ago. - I salute the Universityof Utah for the wonderful work it has done over the years, and renew the charge tothe faculty and students now attending the institution, to help producefor today and for tomorrow the men to match our mountains.Governor of the State of Utah |
