Show footballFootball 1962 for the Utah Redskins was exciting, but alsodisheartening. The Utes came out with a flashing first game victorywhich seemed to be a preview of what was to come, butthings took a turn when the second game broughtdefeat to the team. The rest of the season followed a regular patternof consecutive wins, as in the B. Y. U., Idaho, Colorado Stateand New Mexico tie victory "war-path" series,and in the pattern of consecutive losses, as in theArizona State, Utah State and U. C. L. A. series. Defensively theUtes showed their greatest strength keeping most of theiropponents down in their total rushing average.Offensively they were plagued with fumbles and penalties.THE LINE IS (front row) Marv Fleming, Pat Stillman, Lynn Styles, Dave Costa, Ron Manno, Ed Knowles and Roy Jefferson. Backfield is (row 2) Jerry Overton, Bud Tynes, Bill Cravens and Bud Scalley.Utah's embattled redskins split in hard fought seasonThe Redskin varsity team, pictured above, gained avariety of honors after the 1962 season. Ron Manno, Utecaptain, was named a member of the Western Athletic Conferenceall-scholastic football team and was a recipient of theBlake Scholarship Award. Right end, Marv Fleming, was selectedto play in the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowland was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. Center,Dave Costa, was picked by the Los Angeles Ramsin the third round of the Pro draft. Costa also represented theUniversity in the post season East-West Shrine Game andthe Hula Bowl. Ute right-half, Jerry Overton, displayed his talentsin the Senior Bowl at Mobile, Ala. and was draftedby the Dallas Cowboys in the American Football League. |
