Show student theaterantigoneThe Student Theater, the sector of the University theater department that rests entirely upon student talent, brought three plays to the Pnioneer Memorial Little Theater this season. In the productions of ]. B., Antigone, and Androcles and the Lion, students did the acting, designed the sets and costumes and assisted the theater professors with directing and cast selection. They presented Sophocles' Antigone in a manner similar to the classical Greek Theater. An original score, using four musicians, was composed by James Prigmore in the classical Greek style. Dance segments were also integrated into the play. Students ap-pearing in the play were Donna Smith as Antigone, Gerald Lanning as Creon, Marie Keeler as Eurydice, James Gill as Hamar; and Donya Smith and Virginia Kay were double cast as Ismene.J.B., a drama written in verse by MacLeish, was one of the plays produced this year entirely by students. In this modern day representation of the story of Job, Mike Murdock starred as J.B., a man who lost everything that was dear to him and found the necessity to turn to God. His wife, Sarah, was portrayed by Louri Hutchings, Mrs. Zuess, the personification of God, was played by Richard Nealson and Victor Gordon played Nickles or the devil. H. E. D. Redford, the only faculty member connected with the play, served as director. A symbolic and deep play, J.B. offered students a challenge in conveying the intended meaning and feeling to their audiences./A243 |
