Show aantie mameAuntie Mame, the comical play about an eccentric woman with lavish tastes, an unlimited variety of friends, progressive ideas and a young nephew in her care, was re-created on the stage of the Pioneer Memorial Theater. Mame Dennis, portrayed by Broadway actress Mary Cooper, frollicked through a series of extravagant wardrobes, ultra-modern house decors and parties such as only she could give. She flitted from weath to bankruptcy, from the writing profession to an ill-fated acting career. Unusual people dotted her path wherever she went. They included her comical secretary Agnes Gooch and Beuregard, the oil millionnaire who later became her husband. It was at his southern plantation home that she climed on a horse for the first time and galloped through one of the wildest fox hunts that the south has ever known. Through all her escapades, Mame was followed by young Patrick with his pad and pencil, the tools of vocabulary building.Broadway and Hollywood actress and oscar winner, Kim Hunter, appeared in the title role of George Bernard Shaw's comedy, Major Barbara. She played a major in the Salvation Army who accepted the challenge of converting her munitions manufacturer father to the religion of God from a religion of wealth and power. Her father, Andrew Undershaft, played by Francis L. Urry/ visited a meeting at the West Ham shelter of the Salvation Army and met such "saved souls" as Snobby Price and Rummy Mitchens. He encountered his future son-in-law, drum-beating Salvationist, Adolph Cussins who ultimately became the heir to the munitions factory bringing about an intriguing resolution of the conflict. The play was written in 1906, but still suggests questions that are present in society today, such questions as whether money can buy salvation, whether profits from munitions are justified and whether military power is essential to freedom.major barbara |
