Show u daysA queen pageant, the season's final whitewashing of the U, 5:30 a.m. song practices that climaxed in the traditional Songfest and a dance at Lagoon characterized U Days, the last major all-campus event of the year. The queen contest, which originated in 1962, was emceed by Bill Marcroft of KUTV. The twenty lovely entrants were judged on intelligence, beauty, poise and talent. The whitewash evidenced a change of pace in U Days activities as Utes donned their grubbies, formed a car caravan in front of the Union and began the hillside trek. A cool evening under the stars set the stage for Songfest. Held in the Stadium, the songfest included both novelty and serious numbers. Copping top honors in the novelty category were the Delta Gammas and the Sigma Chis. The D.G.'s dressed in long yellow dresses and glittery pointed hats that looked as though they had come straight out of Camelot, presented a half song-half choral reading about the "Emperor's New Clothes" and dancers acted out the fairy tale. The Sigma Chis, in typical fashion, sang a number filled with humorous cracks about the other fraternities on campus. First place awards in the serious song division went to Alpha Chi Omega and Delha Phi Kappa. The Alpha Chis added their own words to the song, "Till There Was You," while the Delta Phis sang a religious song. Culminating the week was the U Days dance held at Lagoon. Entertainment was provided by Martin Denny and trophy presentation served as an intermission highlight.MEMBERS OF THE U Days committee include John Pingree, chairman, Tom Clark, Margo Taylor, Kay Atkinson, Marianne Kelly, Lorraine Rowley, Jane Wirth-lin, Carmen Boyden and Roger Boyer.CHI OMEGAS, DRESSED in red and white costumes, sang a novelty number to the tune of "Sam's Song."
