Show to better present the worlds great drama,a new theatre is dedicatedA performance of Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, officially opened the new Pioneer Memorial Theater. One thousand invited guests attended the first performance and dedication ceremonies. A short program preceded the curtain rise on the presentation of Hamlet. Governor George Dewey Clyde spoke briefly in behalf of the people of Utah and Dr. C. Lowell Lees represented the department of theater and ballet. President David O. McKay of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke a dedicatory prayer. Tribute was paid to Utah's pioneer heritage and to the old Salt Lake Theater to which the new structure is a memorial. In addition to the main hall, the new building includes a little theater, five classrooms, several rehearsal halls and dressing rooms and the offices of the theater department. The Little Theater provides the stage for Playbox and student productions and is set up as a theater in the round. The main theater houses a 51-foot deep stage which features two elevator platforms that move between the stage and the basement. Engraved name plaques on the arms of the orange chairs commemorate pioneer ancestors.". . . COME, MY SPADE. There is no ancient gentlemen but gardeners, ditchers and grave-makers: they hold up Adam's profession."HURD HATFIELD, GUEST star who played the lead role in Hamlet, stands with outstretched arms as if presenting the new theater. |
