Show Sprinting for the Fair Coeds SORORITY RELAYS UTE STADIUM April 20, 1935 The most sensational and thrilling sorority relay race seen in many years was presented this season between the halves of the charity football game before one of the largest Utah crowds ever to witness a track race. Winning the race for the second consecutive year, the Phi Mu sorority was presented with another plaque after its speedy team composed of George Franks, Mead Winward, Bruce Wiesley, and Karl Welti barely nosed a fast and determined team running for the Delta Gamma sorority out of first place. The sorority relays mark the formal opening of the track season. The purpose of the event is to give Coach Ike Armstrong a chance to look over his material for the coming season and to give the squad members a chance to strut their stuff before the fair coeds. George Franks, acting as anchor man for the winning team, ran an excellent 220 yard run to beat Williams and Greenwell to the tape. SAMUEL SMITH Being the only returned 880 yard man, Sam carried Utah's hopes in this event very well. He has one more year of college competition which means more victories. ED LEUPOLD While most attention has been turned to the record breaking cf Thornley, Eddie has made some excellent throws sufficient to win for him a letter. KNEWELL RUSHFORTH Specializing at the high jumps, Snatch proved his true worth by leaping six feet five and one-half inches to tie Marty, world champion at the event. Two Hundred Seventy-seven |
