Show Pomeroy Skirts End for Big Gain UTAH 6 - DRAKE 0 Under dimmed flood lights, amidst drizzling rain, and plowing through churny seas of mud almost obliterating the playing field, Utah opened its 1934 campaign September 28th with a slashing 6-0 triumph over Drake University at Des Moines, Iowa. Five thousand drenched and chilled lowan spectators saw a sturdy Redskin aggregation drive within the Bulldog five-yard line on three unsuccessful attempts, and finally score on the fourth invasion when clever "Swede" Larsen tossed a short pass over the line to rangy Paul Callis for the touchdown. Drake's relentless defense, playing within its own territory almost the entire four quarters, held Utah from scoring on numerous occasions, while equally forceful Crimson defensive play prevented the vaunted Bulldog offense, led by My Ulb, from gaining dangerous momentum. A 15-yard dash down the slippery field by Lunnen; Hoek's 35-yard return of Kramer's kickoff; Larson's brilliant punting; vicious play by rugged Danny Savich; and frequent fumbles were outstanding features of the contest. BILL COWLEY Amazingly accurate passes from the valuable arm of this guarterback have shattered invincible defenses on numerous occasions, and have proved the incentive for many victories. SID KRAMER This giant, playing the role of a "forgotten man" throughout the season, was a tower of defensive stength, and an invaluable leader of interference. PAUL CALLIS So great was the improvement in the play of this agile wingman that he saw almost enough action in the season contests to be classed as a regular. Two Hundred Fifty-six |
