Show MUSIC Recognized for his excellence in music direction and supervision, Professor Giles has contributed much to the university during his many years as head of the Music Department. His diversified duties, as a result of Professor William Peterson's leave of absence, included the organizing and conducting of the Women's Glee Club. Thomas Giles Director Presenting the largest group ever assembled as a girls' glee club at the University, Professor Giles has developed an organization of unusual ability. With ninety-two voices, much volume and harmony was possible in mastering a great variety of difficult selections. A concert was given in Kingsbury Hall, including characteristic selections from Dvorak, Schumann, Saint Saens, Victor Herbert, Strickland, Puccini, and Lucantoni. This program was repeated as a feature of the University "At Home" series. The club was generously applauded when they sang at the convention of the American Federation of Music Clubs and during their tour of five high schools. Climaxing the year's work the girls cooperated in presenting "The Bartered Bride." Officers for the year were Beth Papworth, president; Louise Thompson, vice-president; and Beryl Randall, librarian. Helen Taylor was accompanist, and Don Kimball assisted with flute obligato. Two Hundred Twenty-six |
