Reconnaissance-Level Cultural Resource Inventory of Liberty Lake, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah Report Date. January 27,2014 Agency Name. U.S. Anny Corps of Engineers Penn it Number. Public Lands Policy Coordination Office Penn it Number 18 (Issued to R. Kelly Beck) Land Ownership Status. City Project Description. SWCA Environmental Consultants conducted a reconnaissance-level cultural resource inventory for the Liberty Park restoration project in Salt Lake City, Utah. The inventory focused on the edges of Liberty Lake where re-vegetation and bank restoration will occur. Project Number. SWCA Project No. 28327, Utah State Antiquities Project No. U-14-ST-0034s Project Location. The project area is in Section 7, Township 1 South, Range 1 West, Salt Lake County, Utah, Salt Lake meridian, Salt Lake City North (2001), Fort Douglas (2001), Salt Lake City South (1975), and Sugar House (2001), Utah, 7.5-minute quadrangles. Number of Acres Surveyed. 2.72 acre(s) National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)-Eligible Sites. One site, 42SL000712. NRHP-Ineligible Sites. Zero sites. Recommendations. Liberty Lake is in Liberty Park, which is listed on the NRHP. Aside from previously recorded park features, no archaeological resources or isolated occurrences were observed during the inventory. SWCA did observe alterations to the pagoda (gazebo) on the northern island in Liberty Lake. The pagoda, as it is described in the NRHP fonn, has been replaced with a modem gazebo. The pagoda was listed as a contributing resource to the overall park. Due to its complete replacement, the pagoda is no longer a contributing element of the park, despite the effort to match the overall shape, scale, and massing of the structure. SWCA recommends no change to the overall NRHP status of Liberty Park. The use of heavy equipment will be restricted to the project area's shoreline. In addition, the shoreline of Liberty Lake has been repeatedly disturbed through replacement and maintenance of the concrete liner and edging. No artifacts were observed during the survey, and any artifacts uncovered during the proposed project would not have an intact context. Consequently, SWCA recommends no historic properties will be affected by the proposed project. |
