Q At what stage was the river when you made that up-stream trip? A Low stage. Q How did you get the boat up? A We towed the boat up the entire distance. Bert Loper had one end of the rope to the side of the boat, and the boat was fixed in such a way that the current in flowing against the side of the boat would keep it out in water deep enough that it would float. Then Bert and I stripped off our trousers and shoes and socks and walk along the sand bars as much as we could, but most of the distance it was necessary to wade along in the shallow, swift- flowing water. As we started to tow this boat upstream, we averaged almost a mile an hour. I think it took us altogether fourteen hours to tow the boat upstream. We would strike someplace where we would have to cross the river, and we always held onto the boat, or onto the rope, so that, in case we would sink in a quicksand, we would have something to, pull us out.
