Show 5647 97 3654 boat at Greenriver, the Belle of Shannon, and went down from there to Wimmer's Ranch, where the freight and equipment had been leaded on the larger barge, and left with the party from there. My duties from there on -- Q Before you get into that, between Greenriver and Wimmer's Ranch, did you encounter my difficulty in taking this boat down there? A Yes, sir, particularly as I was alone and knew nothing of the river and had no experienced there; and the things that stand out most in my mind are the rocky riffs, which I had heard about and been warned about, and which were more serious than sand bars, in my mind. However, frequently I would get into a wrong channel of the river, and could have to get out and push. And I remember occasionally going ever a harder substance, which might have been a boulder, or a rock riff; I did not look to see; I was simply worried as to whether I had gone over or term a hole in the boat; it was a solid sub-stance. But I was very happy to arrive at Wimmer's Ranch, because that part was all new to me, as I say, and it was a new ex-perience. |
