Show 5728 Miser - D 3734 178 The witness. We had no difficulty going down the portion of the river between Chinle Creek and The Narrows; the boats grounded at no place. There was fairly swift water, but the boats were kept so far as possible in the quiet water. There was no trouble with boats, and they grounded at no place. By Mr. Blackmar: Q Well, at that section, did you encounter any rapids? very small riffles. Q Where is the first place that you can give us any definite idea of depths of the water? A Well, the boats really did not ground at any place, until after we passed the mouth of Moon Light Creek. There was one portage necessary, though, at a rapid at Mile 77.5. there there was a small rapid so filled with boulders that the equipment was portaged around the rapid and the boats were taken through empty. Q Between the Narrows and Moon Light, did you encounter any other rapids than that one you have just mentioned? A I have gone over my notes, and placed on this parti-cular map ( indicating) the places where I recorded and remem-bered rapids. |
