Q On the river, did you encounter any sand bars? A Yes, sir. Q How frequently would you say? A Well, I think is was naturally a harder trip, being upstream. But after the high water we had had, the sand bars had changed their position, and even the larger landmarks that I tried to remember were removed, and the ones the older members of the party remembered were removed. Of course, there were such places where there were permanent landmarks along the bank, but the channel of the river had been changed in a great many places and I remember her distinctly being amazed at how they had been changed in places. There were places that were high places when we came back that were covered with water when we went down. But the high places were more easily avoided, jumping around upstream, because if you found a bar it was easy to work backwards and get to the channel. However, there were places where we had to get out and pull and push. Q At nights, did you tie your boats up to the shore? |
